Epilogue

Christian stared at the mirror in the library at Weston Manor. It seemed like an ordinary, perhaps a little fancy, but normal nonetheless, mirror, and yet it had altered the course of his life. Scarlett was his wife, and had been now for a year. He often wondered if they never had that vision if they would have found their way to each other. He also couldn’t help thinking if now for that blasted mirror Nicholas never would have left. He had a love hate relationship with the blasted thing.

“Are you admiring your handsome physique?” a woman asked.

He turned and tilted his lips upward into a smile. His sister, Elizabeth, had sneaked into the library without him noticing. It was a most welcome surprise. “When did you arrive?”

“Not long ago,” she said and came to stand beside them. “This is the most peculiar mirror.” She stared at it thoughtfully. “It showed me Jack before I met him.”

He turned to her and asked sharply, “It did? Why have you never mentioned this before?”

Elizabeth shrugged. “It didn’t seem important before, but now it is.”

Christian frowned. What the blazes did his sister mean by that? “I’m afraid you’ll have to explain that statement to me. I don’t quite grasp the importance of this particular moment.”

His sister sighed and then titled her head to the side. “You know our family is gifted right?”

He wasn’t but he didn’t say that. “I do.”

“You doubt those gifts even when they’re smacking you in the face.” She shook her head. “You don’t believe and that’s why you don’t realize what you have.” She pulled on his coat sleeve. “Come sit with me. It’s time we had a discussion that we’ve both been avoiding.”

Christian blew out a breath and did as she demanded. What would it hurt? He could at least listen to her—even if he didn’t like what she had to say. He plopped down on the settee and waited for her to join him. Elizabeth sat daintily in a chair and folded her hands in her lap. He lifted a brow at her as if to say you wanted me here…you can start the discussion.

“Very well,” she said then smiled wryly. “Do you remember the weeks before Nicholas decided to leave us?”

How could he forget? His twin had been restless and irritable at times. “What of it?”

“He was seeking something he couldn’t find here, and he too believed that he had no gifts.”

Christian jolted upright and planted his feet firmly on the carpeted floor beneath him. “Pardon me, what?”

“It’s true. You two are so much alike it’s almost hilarious…though you are twins, mirror ones, but still twins. His gifts have to do with drawing—he sees things but has to put them down on paper. What do you suppose yours are?”

Christian couldn’t discern what she was trying to say. “Not drawing…” His tone held a hint of sarcasm in it. Nicholas had always been a wonderful artist. Of course that was where his special abilities were strongest.

“You see things too,” she said softly.
